ARTIST BIO:
Originally from Bassett Virginia, I relocated to Harrisonburg, VA to be a visual arts camp counselor and immediately fell in love with the area. After moving back and forth multiple times, the mountains of the valley always call back to me.
Growing up with no TV and the age of dial up internet, I drew to keep my ADHD country bumpkin brain preoccupied. After Graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Art Education, I have dabbled in many mediums such as painting, body painting, sculpting, and even tattooing (where most of my influences now comes from)
Being from an extremely small southern town in the Shenandoah valley, as a kid I always yearned for extra culture. I have always been attracted to old Japanese folk lore since an early age and thought that the Hannya would be perfect subject matter for this collection. The Hannya (般若) mask is a mask used in Japanese Noh theater, representing a jealous female demon. It is characterized by two sharp bull-like horns, metallic eyes, and a leering mouth.
My art has simple meaning…to look cool. There is no deep story, there are no deep denotations. What I want is for someone to glance at my art and say, “Hey that’s pretty Bad Ass” and then walk away with a smile….
